Walk around DC for a day and you’ll pass plenty of places that seem to sell cannabis. Only some of them are licensed. If you want regulated, labeled products and a legal purchase, it’s worth knowing how to tell the difference before you hand over any money.
The one check that settles it
The Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA) publishes the list of licensed medical cannabis retailers. If a shop isn’t on it, it isn’t a licensed retailer, however professional it looks. Doobie District is on that list at 1526 U Street NW. It takes less than a minute to check, and it’s the most reliable test there is.
What a licensed shop will ask you for
Licensed retailers in DC serve registered medical cannabis patients. Expect to be asked for a government-issued photo ID and a valid DC registration, a temporary non-resident registration, or an out-of-state card DC accepts. Signs you’re in the right place
- A fixed, findable address. Licensed stores have a permanent storefront you can look up on a map.
- Labeled products. Every item should carry a label with cannabinoid content, producer and batch details, and required warnings.
- A straightforward sale. You’re buying cannabis products, priced as cannabis products, with a receipt.
- Staff who explain rather than promise. A good team will walk you through labels and formats. They won’t tell you a product will treat a condition.
Red flags worth walking away from
- Cannabis offered as a “free bonus” with an overpriced T-shirt, sticker or other merchandise.
- Pop-up tables or events with no permanent location.
- Delivery services that won’t give you a business address or license details.
- Unlabeled bags or jars, or products with no batch information.
- Health claims, such as a product that “cures” anxiety or pain.
Why it matters
